“The song is never lost. It simply becomes quieter beneath the noise.”
I thought my second digital detox was about spending less time on social media.
It wasn’t.
It was about realizing I’d been building my business in the wrong place.
For years, we’ve been taught that social media is our business.
Post every day.
Feed the algorithm.
Stay relevant.
Create more content.
Engage more.
Show up more.
But during two weeks away from social media, something unexpected happened.
My ideas multiplied.
I started writing again.
I finished projects that had been sitting unfinished for months.
Instead of asking, “What should I post today?”
I found myself asking, “What do I actually want to create?”
That one question changed everything.
Because I realized something embarrassingly obvious.
We’ve been building our houses in the parking lot.
Social media isn’t your home.
It’s the farmer’s market.
You bring your best tomatoes.
You meet wonderful people.
You have conversations.
Then you invite people back to the farm.
But somewhere along the way, many of us forgot where the farm was.
We started building sheds, fences, kitchens, and entire lives…in the parking lot.
The landlord owns the parking lot.
The algorithm decides who walks by.
And one day, the market could close.
Your farm, however?
That’s yours.
Your blog.
Your email list.
Your books.
Your YouTube channel.
Your courses.
Your community.
Your website.
That’s owned land.
Every article you publish is another fruit tree.
Every email is another garden bed.
Every book is another cabin.
Every video is another path someone can walk years from now.
Social media?
That’s simply the sign on the highway pointing people toward your farm.
Not the farm itself.
The funny thing is…
During my digital detox, I thought I was disconnecting from social media.
Instead, I was reconnecting with my own voice.
I stopped creating for the algorithm.
I started creating for people.
I stopped asking what would perform.
I started asking what was true.
That shift changed everything.
I’m not leaving social media.
I’m just changing my relationship with it.
I’ll dip my toe into the river.
Share something meaningful.
Cheer on my friends.
Maybe decline a few ads.
And then…
I’m heading back to the farm.
Because that’s where the real work happens.
Digital Sovereignty
Food sovereignty means growing more of your own food.
Financial sovereignty means owning more of your income.
Health sovereignty means taking responsibility for your body.
Attention sovereignty means protecting your focus.
So why aren’t we talking about Digital Sovereignty?
Digital sovereignty means creating assets you own instead of constantly producing content for platforms you don’t.
It means using social media as a bridge—not as your destination.
It means remembering that the algorithm is a tool, not your boss.
And perhaps most importantly…
It means building a life that still exists when you close the app.
